From Gold to Guidance: Chioma Ajunwa Rallies Global Stakeholders Against Youth Substance Abuse

LAGOS, NIGERIA — Nigeria’s first individual Olympic gold medalist and retired Deputy Commissioner of Police, Chioma Ajunwa-Opara, MON, has launched a major national campaign to combat youth substance abuse.Organized by the Chioma Ajunwa Foundation, the high-profile advocacy event took place at the Police College Field in Ikeja, Lagos. The initiative was timed to mark the United Nations International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking.Merging Sports with Serious AdvocacyThe campaign brought together youth groups, athletes, and top international stakeholders to address Nigeria's growing youth drug crisis. To drive engagement, the event uniquely blended athletic celebration with community advocacy.

The highlight of the day was a symbolic novelty football match. The game featured Chioma Ajunwa’s Veteran Female Football Team playing against the War Against Drug Abuse (WADA) Male Team from the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA).High-Profile Backing and EducationAlongside the sporting event, an enlightenment seminar attracted significant institutional support. Key attendees and partners included:

  • The Presidency

  • The NDLEA leadership

  • International Diplomats, including the Consul Generals of China and Germany

A Plea for the FutureAt the core of the campaign was a deeply personal message from Ajunwa. She warned the youth that drug abuse "truncates God-given talents and crushes big dreams." Her warnings were reinforced by sobering data from the NDLEA, which highlighted a disturbing trend of drug use starting at increasingly younger ages among school-aged children. The collaborative event concluded with a unified call to action to steer Nigerian youth away from illicit substances and toward constructive, fulfilling futures.
