Free Medical Care for Those Living with Cataract

The Chioma Ajunwa Foundation has officially launched a new free medical initiative aimed at restoring sight and hope for Nigerians living with cataracts. This life-changing program provides a lifeline for underserved individuals who cannot afford the high cost of corrective eye surgery.
Spearheaded by Nigeria's first individual Olympic gold medalist, Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP) Chioma Ajunwa-Oparah (MON), the foundation’s medical team has already successfully treated hundreds of patients. By offering comprehensive eye examinations, surgical interventions, and post-operative care at no cost, the initiative aims to help beneficiaries regain their independence and return to productive livelihoods.
The program is a collaborative effort, with the foundation partnering with leading ophthalmologists and top-tier medical facilities to ensure the highest standard of care. Notably, the initiative has received significant support from the Consul General of the People’s Republic of China and the Chinese community in Nigeria.

A Growing Legacy of Charity
While widely known for her historic 1996 Olympic victory and her ongoing work in sports development and anti-drug advocacy, Ajunwa’s latest foray into medical outreach highlights a deepening commitment to humanitarian causes.
“This initiative is about restoring dignity,” the foundation stated. “Vision loss often leads to social and economic isolation, and we are dedicated to ensuring that financial status does not determine whether a person can see the world clearly again”.
How to Access Treatment
The foundation operates the program on a "first-in, first-out" basis, with new batches of surgeries typically organized every few months.
